The 1987 vintage was the first Washington wine to be on Wine Spectator’s Top 10 list. This is a full-bodied cabernet and will typically age well with proper cellar conditions, 15+ years from vintage.

Tasting Notes
This wine is dark purple and dense in the glass. Aromas of cocoa, black currant, and anise develop with a rich concentration of ripe black fruits and molasses. New French oak integrates the fruit, acid, and alcohol creating a nice weight, texture, and overall mouthfeel. The smooth but firm tannins leave you with a seamlessly rich and long finish. The wine expresses the purity of fully mature cabernet sauvignon that can only be achieved from old vine fruit. Store and serve at cellar temperature.

95 POINTS & Cellar Selection - Wine Enthusiast 95 POINTS - Owen Bargreen: The brilliant 2020 Woodward Canyon ‘Old Vines’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a sensational new bottling by Kevin Moss. The palate is dense and chewy with serious finesse and nice richness. Dark cherry cordial with mocha and shades of black licorice all combine on the palate. This has a weightless quality and an extremely long, black fruit-driven finish that completes this seamless beauty. Generous and layered, this will cellar well over the next fifteen years. Drink 2022-2037. 94+ POINTS - Jeb Dunnuck: The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines comes from a mix of sites and was brought up all in new French barrels. Its deep plum/purple color is followed by a ripe, meaty, iron-laced bouquet offering plenty of black fruit, leafy herbs, chocolate, and graphite. This concentrated, medium to full-bodied red has a great mid-palate, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's tight, closed, and mostly potential today, but this is a terrific wine that will benefit from 4-5 years in the cellar and evolve for two decades. 94 POINTS - International Wine Report: The 2020 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines is sourced from some of Washington’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Possessing 3% each of Petit Verdot and Malbec and spending 22 months in 100% new French oak, this medium purple offering shows prominent oak on the nose. The fine, settled, and sultry tannic base provides a wonderful mouthfeel. Blackberry, smokey bramble, prune, and sweet tobacco are all present early. This medium-bodied wine continues to round out as it moves mid-palate through the finish, flashing ripe plum, concentrated licorice, and slight liquid malt. There is no reason to delay enjoying this wine, it is approachable now and will have 15 good years of enjoyment ahead of it. 94 POINTS - Vinous: Opening slowly in the glass, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines from Woodward Canyon blends dusty dried roses with crushed black raspberry, dried cherries, savory exotic spice and the slightest hint of animal musk that adds an Old World flair. It's rich and textural on the palate, balanced by brisk acids and cooling mineral tones, displaying potent wild berry fruits and wild herbal tones that form toward the close. A wall of grippy tannins penetrate deeply as red currant notes mix with cola and mocha through the long and dramatic finale. Vineyard Notes
Sagemoor Vineyard (63%): Founded in 1968, Sagemoor Vineyards was a pioneering effort that helped establish the Washington State wine industry. Its early vineyards are among the oldest plantings of vinifera grapes in the state. Rick began using Sagemoor fruit in his home winemaking days, and we continue to use it today. A significant number of 1972 plantings are still producing our Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from specific rows in Blocks 3 and 9. Quincy loamy fine sand, Sagehill very fine sandy loam, 2-10% slope. 572ft elevation. Weinbau Vineyard (31%): Weinbau has a view of the Rattlesnake Mountains to the south, and the Saddle Mountains to the north. The land slopes gently south, with elevation ranging from 710-950 feet. Weinbau is a warm site with excellent air drainage, and the soil is dominated by Kennewick silt loam with a 2-5% slope. The consistency of soil type shows up in vine growth and subsequently in the wines. Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (6%): Planted in 1977, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750 -850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified.
