2014 "Old Vines" Cabernet Sauvignon

This 2014 Washington State “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes that were planted in the early 1970’s.  From late September through mid-October, the old block grapes were harvested by hand from Champoux Vineyard (55%) and Sagemoor Vineyard (41%) located on two very distinct benches above the Columbia River. The petit verdot was harvested from Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (4%).

Tasting Notes
This “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon is incredibly complex showing the sophistication, balance and structure that come from such extraordinary “old vine” vineyards.  It expresses the purity and typicity of fully mature cabernet sauvignon that can only be achieved from old vine fruit.  The color is dark purple with elevated aromas of cedar, baking spice, graphite and cassis.  Flavors of black fruits blend beautifully with the exotic spice of new oak.  The texture is silky yet firm with integrated tannins offering a rich, lingering finish.  With proper storage this wine should easily age for ten years or more.
Ratings
92 POINTS, OCTOBER 2017 Vinous “Saturated bright ruby. Very rich, inviting aromas of blueberry liqueur and dark chocolate lifted by a violet topnote. Plush dark berry and spice flavors convey a lovely chocolatey sweetness, with the terrific old-vines concentration giving the wine a layered mouth feel. Finishes with substantial velvety, tooth-dusting tannins and slowly building, chocolatey length, with notes of cassis and graphite minerality arriving late.”
Production Notes
The wine was fermented in 2000 liter stainless steel tanks and was punched down two times per day.  Average fermentation was between seven and ten days.  After pressing and racking, the various lots were moved to new French barrels for aging and maturation.  In early summer of 2016 the wine was racked from barrel, assembled and bottled in early July.
